Sierra Leone
The Pujehun Demographic Surveillance Area (DSA), located in Sierra Leone’s Southern Province, encompasses a diverse range of rural and semi-urban communities along the country’s coastal and border zones. The district’s administrative and commercial centre, Pujehun Town, lies within Kpanga Chiefdom, serving as the focal point for governance, trade, and service delivery. The DSA includes communities across Kpanga, Kpaka, Mano San Krim, and Yakema Kpukumu Krim Chiefdoms. Kpanga Chiefdom features a mixed urban and rural population with relatively better access to education, health services, and energy infrastructure, although challenges persist in reproductive health and youth employment. Kpaka Chiefdom is predominantly agrarian, with livelihoods centered on farming and fishing, yet faces high maternal health vulnerability and dependence on unsafe water sources. Mano San Krim Chiefdom, situated along the coastal belt, combines agriculture and artisanal fishing but experiences periodic flooding and sanitation challenges that affect local health outcomes. Yakema Kpukumu Krim Chiefdom, is characterized by dispersed settlements, limited healthcare access, and low energy coverage. Despite these challenges, strong social cohesion and community structures present opportunities for decentralized health delivery and climate-resilient development.
