Sierra Leone
The Karene Demographic Surveillance Area (DSA), the most populous site under the CHESS Research Programme, is situated in Sierra Leone’s North-West Region, sharing its northern boundary with the Republic of Guinea. Kamakwie Town serves as the district’s administrative hub and focal point for socio-economic activities. The surveillance area encompasses contiguous communities across Sella Limba, Tambakha Yobangie, and Tambakha Simibungie Chiefdoms. Sella Limba, which includes Kamakwie Town, Kayimbor, and Samia Sections, exhibits moderate urbanization, relatively higher educational attainment, and diversified livelihoods, though youth unemployment and limited access to safe water remain persistent challenges. Tambakha Yobangie is predominantly rural, with residents relying heavily on subsistence farming and wood fuel; yet, the community demonstrates improving healthcare-seeking behaviour and promising cross-border collaboration potential. Tambakha Simibungie, the most remote of the three, is characterized by low education levels, traditional housing structures, and limited infrastructure. While solar energy adoption is gradually increasing, water insecurity and maternal health challenges continue to affect community wellbeing.
